“Popular belief in France is that, if there is government control, it is in place to protect people, regardless of whether this is true or not. The better the power in place knows its population, the easier it will be for it to be proactive in healthcare prevention, to foresee long term plans for education, infrastructures, energy independence etc.

Here in the U.S., the idea of having more government presence is immediately associated with less freedom for the people. Recently, strong political currents pushing for almost no government at all got national attention. This is completely unthinkable in France.”
